THE HAILE SELASSIE Ist EXHIBITION

The

NEGUSA NEGAST

Collection

27th May - 12th June 2009

Emperor Haile Selassie 1st of Ethiopia is the Lion King which is shown riding the Lion of Zion in the collections logo.

This exhibition is the first of it's kind in Europe and marks the 73rd anniversary of Emperor Haile Selassie 1st spending 5 years in exile between 1936 - 1941 in the city of Bath.

The Negusa Negast collection is owned by Habte Wold the founder of Ethiopian Insight who specialises in the history of Emperor Haile Selassie 1st, The Rastafari movement & Ethiopia.

This was the first time that this unique exhibition was on public view, and it was also the first time that the building has been used in this way, but it lived up to expectations.

Ethiopian Insight & a new project named the Rastafari Roots & Development in the West Midlands joined as partners in the event to organise the exhibition and community consultation.

The Molineux Hotel was a derelict shell for many years before being fully refurbished and is now being used for the city archives, the public attended in large numbers and asked many questions about the items on display and about the Rastafari movements which has proved a mystery to most observers whose only knowledge about the movement was dreadlock's and reggae music.

Rastafari is now being taught in Birmingham schools and the exhibition has been a good introduction to young and old from different ethnic backgrounds, school children and their teachers were full of questions, and many adults commented on how refreshing the information was and how fascinating the explanations to each item were.
